Huaxtec was invited this year to be part of the Day of the Dead Exhibit opening celebration at the Oakland Museum of art to do chalk pieces on the sidewalk in front of the museum. About 50 of us showed up Sunday morning, including youth from Huaxtec, Visual Element, Youth Brigade and UPA, everybody took a square on the sidewalk with a image to reproduce. The process was really cool, people who don’t usually make art were able to create some really amazing pieces. With a stencil that melanie and i cut, we teamed up with Visual Element to do a stencil rendition of Posada’s Catrina for the center piece. Around the image of la Catrina, Visual Element chalked “Celebrando Vida Y Muerte” in graffiti style lettering.
